Step 2: Focused studies on current issues
Exactly because we
have to deal with a system, a community of interdependent and interacting
parts, any kind of intervention will affect almost all of its components,
hence, we carry out some baseline reference studies. Apart from the status of
our target organisms, we also assess the status of other organisms that are not
targeted but might well be affected by interventions. This will allow us to
organise our interventions in such a way as not to have negative impacts on
them, identify potential precautionary actions or mitigation interventions and,
furthermore, to set-up a plausible monitoring system to assess the effects of
management. At this stage we also have to assess the effect of ongoing climate
change on our target systems. Furthermore, in this step we should also carry
out the necessary feasibility studies regarding the use of the harvested
biomass.
